a
statement from Mr. Mudie fully
explaining the case
and a detailed account. I should
add that Mr. Mudie himself is
on a moderate salary,
and has a
dependent wife and children to
support, I can but believe that
when the circumstances
of the case
are laid before the family of Mr. Berkeley they will take care that
Mr. Mudie is not allowed to lose
by the generous part he took in
saving their relative from
the disgrace to which he had laid himself open by what I can but
regard as his very
dishonourable conduct.
I ought to add that
owing to a pressure of
business some delay
has occurred in transmitting
this correspondence.
I am,
Sir
Yours faithfully (S*) S. Brown
Surveyor General to the Government of Hong Kong.
